Trends are constantly coming and going within the beauty industry, as well as fashion, nails and pretty much anything else you can imagine. With trends in makeup, the great thing about them is that you can learn new skills in order to perfect new looks, and you can even create them using products you’ve already got in your collection, which saves some of your money. It’s good to be ahead of the trends so you can get yourself ready for the new year and get used to the techniques you need to use to create them, so you’re ready to conquer your makeup!
Dark smoky eyes
Many designers this year, particularly Chanel, have made a big emphasis on the good old black smoky eye, filling the lid in a deep dark colour, and blending this out into the crease around it. For those with hooded or almond eyes, now’s your time to shine, as the style and shape of the designs we’ve seen suit these eye shapes really well, but you can obviously recreate them on any eye shape, too.
Red accents
Time to channel your inner Coco Chanel, by reviving the iconic red lip, along with a new twist. Some designers have utilised the strong colour along the lash lone as eyeliner, which makes for a really nice, fresh change. This means that you can draw attention to either your lips or your eyes, depending all on which you are feeling that day. Either way there is nothing better than making a statement with the colour red.
Bold black eyeliner
Smoky eyes aren’t the only eye makeup that are trending for 2021, and you can expect some more clean-cut black eye statements, too, as brought to fashion week by familiar names, including Paco Rabanne and Chloe. The black eyeliner trend now stands alone, without the addition of any other colours in the crease or on the lid, to add a sharper feel to the look and channel your inner boss. Whether you like more blended or clean-cut styles, there’s something for everyone.
Pink lipstick
As well as some of the red accents which have popped up in the SS21 fashion shows, pink is another bold lip colour which is making a comeback, and it’s about time. If you’ve got any pink hues that you’ve been itching to get some use out of, now is the time. What’s been really effective is how designers and artists have paired these statement lips with neutral or even no eye makeup, and a little bit of pink blush, to really draw attention to the lips, and give the pink the moment it deserves.
‘No makeup’ makeup
If you were keeping up to date with last year’s makeup trends, you will have noticed that the ‘no-makeup’ makeup looks were circulating all around social media, and many designers were incorporating the style into their runway outfits and fashion shows. With work from home still likely in the near future, this trend doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, and it’s a great option for days when time is tight, or you don’t want to spend hours doing your makeup.
Your skin but better
Similar to the ‘no-makeup’ makeup looks we’re expecting that skincare will also remains a large focus in our routines. The thing that sets this trend apart from others is it’s sole focus on the skin. This is regardless of the brows or lashes, and strives to create a fresh, flawless, glass-like surface on the skin. This doesn’t all come from the skincare routine alone, some makeup products have been specifically created exactly for this purpose, so look out for them when you do your 2021 shopping.
Final thoughts
While there are some trends we haven’t seen for a while, others are sticking around from last year. There is a minimalistic nature to many of the trends we’re going to see next year, and there is a lot of black on the eyes along with bolder colours on the lips. Now that you know about these trends, you can expect them in advance, and start to prepare yourself for the start of the year!
