The difference between lip gloss and lipstick

by Suzi MarshJanuary 27, 2021 in Beauty Blogs,

If you’re just getting started in the world of beauty, it can be overwhelming trying to keep track of all the different products that are on the shelves. Should foundation be powder, liquid or cream, for example, and should you choose liquid or pencil liner? Another one of the most confusing questions for newbies to tackle is that of lipstick vs. lip gloss, so we’ve outlined the major differences between these two beauty staples.

Appearance

This is probably the biggest difference between the two products. Lipstick, in whatever shade, is all about solid, no-nonsense colour that creates a polished glamorous effect. Lip gloss, on the other hand, creates a sheer, opaque look that’s generally more suited to everyday wear.

Durability

Another key difference is in how long they will keep your lips looking fabulous. These days, a good lipstick can last a surprising amount of time, even while you’re eating and drinking. With certain long-lasting formulas, you’ll even need a special product to get it off at the end of the day. Meanwhile, glosses are much more fleeting, delivering a sweep of colour for a short time.

Style

Traditionally, lip glosses have been associated with a younger, teenage market, while lipsticks were for a more mature crowd. Think pink, glittery lips vs. the dramatic pout created by a classic red lippy. But now, all that’s changing. And while there are some lipsticks being developed to give a younger, shimmery finish, there are also all manner of sophisticated glosses ideal for older generations.

Lip care

Of course, what you put on your lips isn’t just about colour and definition. Now, most good products deliver real benefits as well as a fashionable look. Because they penetrate deeper into the skin, lipsticks are good at delivering hydrating and moisturising ingredients and leaving your lips looking smooth. Meanwhile, many glosses contain benefits like Vitamin E to boost circulation and regenerate skin.
